Example reciter

Muhsin Khan

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan When the Event (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) befalls.

Pickthall When the event befalleth -

Muhsin Khan And there can be no denying of its befalling.

Pickthall There is no denying that it will befall -

Muhsin Khan It will bring low (some); (and others) it will exalt;

Pickthall Abasing (some), exalting (others);

Muhsin Khan When the earth will be shaken with a terrible shake.

Pickthall When the earth is shaken with a shock

Muhsin Khan And the mountains will be powdered to dust.

Pickthall And the hills are ground to powder

Muhsin Khan So that they will become floating dust particles.

Pickthall So that they become a scattered dust,

Muhsin Khan And you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups).

Pickthall And ye will be three kinds:

Muhsin Khan So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands), Who will be those on the Right Hand? (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise).

Pickthall (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

Muhsin Khan And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands), Who will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell).

Pickthall And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?

Muhsin Khan And those foremost [(in Islamic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islam,] will be foremost (in Paradise).

Pickthall And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:

Muhsin Khan These will be those nearest to Allah.

Pickthall Those are they who will be brought nigh

Muhsin Khan In the Gardens of delight (Paradise).

Pickthall In gardens of delight;

Muhsin Khan A multitude of those (foremost) will be from the first generations (who embraced Islam).

Pickthall A multitude of those of old

Muhsin Khan And a few of those (foremost) will be from the later time (generations).

Pickthall And a few of those of later time.

Muhsin Khan (They will be) on thrones woven with gold and precious stones,

Pickthall On lined couches,

Muhsin Khan Reclining thereon, face to face.

Pickthall Reclining therein face to face.

Muhsin Khan They will be served by immortal boys,

Pickthall There wait on them immortal youths

Muhsin Khan With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine,

Pickthall With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring

Muhsin Khan Wherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.

Pickthall Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,

Muhsin Khan And fruit; that they may choose.

Pickthall And fruit that they prefer

Muhsin Khan And the flesh of fowls that they desire.

Pickthall And flesh of fowls that they desire.

Muhsin Khan And (there will be) Houris (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for the pious),

Pickthall And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,

Muhsin Khan Like unto preserved pearls.

Pickthall Like unto hidden pearls,

Muhsin Khan A reward for what they used to do.

Pickthall Reward for what they used to do.

Muhsin Khan No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech (like backbiting, etc.).

Pickthall There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination

Muhsin Khan But only the saying of: Salam!, Salam! (greetings with peace) !

Pickthall (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace.

Muhsin Khan And those on the Right Hand, Who will be those on the Right Hand?

Pickthall And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

Muhsin Khan (They will be) among thornless lote-trees,

Pickthall Among thornless lote-trees

Muhsin Khan Among Talh (banana-trees) with fruits piled one above another,

Pickthall And clustered plantains,

Muhsin Khan In shade long-extended,

Pickthall And spreading shade,

Muhsin Khan By water flowing constantly,

Pickthall And water gushing,

Muhsin Khan And fruit in plenty,

Pickthall And fruit in plenty

Muhsin Khan Whose season is not limited, and their supply will not be cut off,

Pickthall Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden,

Muhsin Khan And on couches or thrones, raised high.

Pickthall And raised couches;

Muhsin Khan Verily, We have created them (maidens) of special creation.

Pickthall Lo! We have created them a (new) creation

Muhsin Khan And made them virgins.

Pickthall And made them virgins,

Muhsin Khan Loving (their husbands only), equal in age.

Pickthall Lovers, friends,

Muhsin Khan For those on the Right Hand.

Pickthall For those on the right hand;

Muhsin Khan A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islam).

Pickthall A multitude of those of old

Muhsin Khan And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations).

Pickthall And a multitude of those of later time.

Muhsin Khan And those on the Left Hand Who will be those on the Left Hand?

Pickthall And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand?

Muhsin Khan In fierce hot wind and boiling water,

Pickthall In scorching wind and scalding water

Muhsin Khan And shadow of black smoke,

Pickthall And shadow of black smoke,

Muhsin Khan (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good,

Pickthall Neither cool nor refreshing.

Muhsin Khan Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury,

Pickthall Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury

Muhsin Khan And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.)

Pickthall And used to persist in the awful sin.

Muhsin Khan And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?

Pickthall And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,

Muhsin Khan "And also our forefathers?"

Pickthall And also our forefathers?

Muhsin Khan Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times.

Pickthall Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time

Muhsin Khan "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day.

Pickthall Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.

Muhsin Khan "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)!

Pickthall Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,

Muhsin Khan "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum.

Pickthall Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum

Muhsin Khan "Then you will fill your bellies therewith,

Pickthall And will fill your bellies therewith;

Muhsin Khan "And drink boiling water on top of it,

Pickthall And thereon ye will drink of boiling water,

Muhsin Khan "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!"

Pickthall Drinking even as the camel drinketh.

Muhsin Khan That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense!

Pickthall This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.

Muhsin Khan We created you, then why do you believe not?

Pickthall We created you. Will ye then admit the truth?

Muhsin Khan Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit.

Pickthall Have ye seen that which ye emit?

Muhsin Khan Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator?

Pickthall Do ye create it or are We the Creator?

Muhsin Khan We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable,

Pickthall We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,

Muhsin Khan To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not.

Pickthall That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.

Muhsin Khan And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed?

Pickthall And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?

Muhsin Khan Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground.

Pickthall Have ye seen that which ye cultivate?

Muhsin Khan Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower?

Pickthall Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?

Muhsin Khan Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment).

Pickthall If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim:

Muhsin Khan (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219]

Pickthall Lo! we are laden with debt!

Muhsin Khan "Nay, but we are deprived!"

Pickthall Nay, but we are deprived!

Muhsin Khan Tell Me! The water that you drink.

Pickthall Have ye observed the water which ye drink?

Muhsin Khan Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down?

Pickthall Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?

Muhsin Khan If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)?

Pickthall If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks?

Muhsin Khan Tell Me! The fire which you kindle,

Pickthall Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out;

Muhsin Khan Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower?

Pickthall Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower?

Muhsin Khan We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world).

Pickthall We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness.

Muhsin Khan Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

Pickthall Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.

Muhsin Khan So I swear by Mawaqi (setting or the mansions, etc.) of the stars (they traverse).

Pickthall Nay, I swear by the places of the stars -

Muhsin Khan And verily, that is indeed a great oath, if you but know.

Pickthall And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew -

Muhsin Khan That (this) is indeed an honourable recital (the Noble Quran).

Pickthall That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an

Muhsin Khan In a Book well-guarded (with Allah in the heaven i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz).

Pickthall In a Book kept hidden

Muhsin Khan Which (that Book with Allah) none can touch but the purified (i.e. the angels).

Pickthall Which none toucheth save the purified,

Muhsin Khan A Revelation (this Quran) from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

Pickthall A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

Muhsin Khan Is it such a talk (this Quran) that you (disbelievers) deny?

Pickthall Is it this Statement that ye scorn,

Muhsin Khan And instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives you, on the contrary, you deny Him (by disbelief)!

Pickthall And make denial thereof your livelihood?

Muhsin Khan Then why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat?

Pickthall Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)

Muhsin Khan And you at the moment are looking on,

Pickthall And ye are at that moment looking

Muhsin Khan But We (i.e. Our angels who take the soul) are nearer to him than you, but you see not, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.27, Page 209]

Pickthall - And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -

Muhsin Khan Then why do you not, if you are exempt from the reckoning and recompense (punishment, etc.)

Pickthall Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),

Muhsin Khan Bring back the soul (to its body), if you are truthful?

Pickthall Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?

Muhsin Khan Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabun (those brought near to Allah),

Pickthall Thus if he is of those brought nigh,

Muhsin Khan (There is for him) rest and provision, and a Garden of delights (Paradise).

Pickthall Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.

Muhsin Khan And if he (the dying person) be of those on the Right Hand,

Pickthall And if he is of those on the right hand,

Muhsin Khan Then there is safety and peace (from the Punishment of Allah) for (you as you are from) those on the Right Hand.

Pickthall Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.

Muhsin Khan But if he (the dying person) be of the denying (of the Resurrection), the erring (away from the Right Path of Islamic Monotheism),

Pickthall But if he is of the rejecters, the erring,

Muhsin Khan Then for him is entertainment with boiling water.

Pickthall Then the welcome will be boiling water

Muhsin Khan And burning in Hell-fire.

Pickthall And roasting at hell-fire.

Muhsin Khan Verily, this! This is an absolute Truth with certainty.

Pickthall Lo! this is certain truth.

Muhsin Khan So glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

Pickthall Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
