Muhsin Khan

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan Ta-Sin-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.]

Pickthall Ta. Sin. Mim.

Muhsin Khan These are the Verses of the manifest Book [this Quran, which was promised by Allah in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), makes things clear].

Pickthall These are revelations of the Scripture that maketh plain.

Muhsin Khan It may be that you (O Muhammad SAW) are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers [in your Risalah (Messengership) and in your Message of Islamic Monotheism].

Pickthall It may be that thou tormentest thyself (O Muhammad) because they believe not.

Muhsin Khan If We will, We could send down to them from the heaven a sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

Pickthall If We will, We can send down on them from the sky a portent so that their necks would remain bowed before it.

Muhsin Khan And never comes there unto them a Reminder as a recent revelation from the Most Beneficent (Allah), but they turn away therefrom.

Pickthall Never cometh there unto them a fresh reminder from the Beneficent One, but they turn away from it.

Muhsin Khan So they have indeed denied (the truth - this Quran), then the news of what they mocked at, will come to them.

Pickthall Now they have denied (the Truth); but there will come unto them tidings of that whereat they used to scoff.

Muhsin Khan Do they not observe the earth, how much of every good kind We cause to grow therein?

Pickthall Have they not seen the earth, how much of every fruitful kind We make to grow therein?

Muhsin Khan Verily, in this is an Ayah (proof or sign), yet most of them (polytheists, pagans, etc., who do not believe in Resurrection) are not believers.

Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.

Muhsin Khan And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan And (remember) when your Lord called Musa (Moses) (saying): "Go to the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing),

Pickthall And when thy Lord called Moses, saying: Go unto the wrongdoing folk,

Muhsin Khan The people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh). Will they not fear Allah and become righteous?"

Pickthall The folk of Pharaoh. Will they not ward off (evil)?

Muhsin Khan He said: "My Lord! Verily, I fear that they will belie me,

Pickthall He said: My Lord! Lo! I fear that they will deny me,

Muhsin Khan "And my breast straitens, and my tongue expresses not well. So send for Harun (Aaron) (to come along with me).

Pickthall And I shall be embarrassed, and my tongue will not speak plainly, therefor send for Aaron (to help me).

Muhsin Khan "And they have a charge of crime against me, and I fear they will kill me."

Pickthall And they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.

Muhsin Khan Allah said: "Nay! Go you both with Our Signs. Verily! We shall be with you, listening.

Pickthall He said: Nay, verily. So go ye twain with Our tokens. Lo! We shall be with you, Hearing.

Muhsin Khan "And when you both come to Fir'aun (Pharaoh), say: 'We are the Messengers of the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists),

Pickthall And come together unto Pharaoh and say: Lo! we bear a message of the Lord of the Worlds,

Muhsin Khan "So allow the Children of Israel to go with us.' "

Pickthall (Saying): Let the Children of Israel go with us.

Muhsin Khan [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said [to Musa (Moses)]: "Did we not bring you up among us as a child? And you did dwell many years of your life with us.

Pickthall (Pharaoh) said (unto Moses): Did we not rear thee among us as a child? And thou didst dwell many years of thy life among us,

Muhsin Khan "And you did your deed, which you did (i.e. the crime of killing a man). And you are one of the ingrates."

Pickthall And thou didst that thy deed which thou didst, and thou wast one of the ingrates.

Muhsin Khan Musa (Moses) said: "I did it then, when I was an ignorant (as regards my Lord and His Message).

Pickthall He said: I did it then, when I was of those who are astray.

Muhsin Khan "So I fled from you when I feared you. But my Lord has granted me Hukman (i.e. religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood), and appointed me as one of the Messengers.

Pickthall Then I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him).

Muhsin Khan "And this is the past favour with which you reproach me, that you have enslaved the Children of Israel."

Pickthall And this is the past favour wherewith thou reproachest me: that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel.

Muhsin Khan Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "And what is the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)?"

Pickthall Pharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the Worlds?

Muhsin Khan Musa (Moses) said: "Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you seek to be convinced with certainty."

Pickthall (Moses) said: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye had but sure belief.

Muhsin Khan Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said to those around: "Do you not hear (what he says)?"

Pickthall (Pharaoh) said unto those around him: Hear ye not?

Muhsin Khan Musa (Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers!"

Pickthall He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers.

Muhsin Khan Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "Verily, your Messenger who has been sent to you is a madman!"

Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: Lo! your messenger who hath been sent unto you is indeed a madman!

Muhsin Khan Musa (Moses) said: "Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you did but understand!"

Pickthall He said: Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if ye did but understand.

Muhsin Khan Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "If you choose an ilah (god) other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners."

Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: If thou choosest a god other than me, I assuredly shall place thee among the prisoners.

Muhsin Khan Musa (Moses) said: "Even if I bring you something manifest (and convincing)?"

Pickthall He said: Even though I show thee something plain?

Muhsin Khan Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "Bring it forth then, if you are of the truthful!"

Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: Produce it then, if thou art of the truthful!

Muhsin Khan So [Musa (Moses)] threw his stick, and behold, it was a serpent, manifest.

Pickthall Then he flung down his staff and it became a serpent manifest,

Muhsin Khan And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

Pickthall And he drew forth his hand and lo! it was white to the beholders.

Muhsin Khan [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer.

Pickthall (Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard,

Muhsin Khan "He wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery, then what is it your counsel, and what do you command?"

Pickthall Who would drive you out of your land by his magic. Now what counsel ye?

Muhsin Khan They said: "Put him off and his brother (for a while), and send callers to the cities

Pickthall They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners

Muhsin Khan "To bring up to you every well-versed sorcerer."

Pickthall Who shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard.

Muhsin Khan So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed.

Pickthall So the wizards were gathered together at a set time on a day appointed.

Muhsin Khan And it was said to the people: "Are you (too) going to assemble?

Pickthall And it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering?

Muhsin Khan "That we may follow the sorcerers [who were on Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) religion of disbelief] if they are the winners."

Pickthall (They said): Aye, so that we may follow the wizards if they are the winners.

Muhsin Khan So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Fir'aun (Pharaoh): "Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?"

Pickthall And when the wizards came they said unto Pharaoh: Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?

Muhsin Khan He said: "Yes, and you shall then verily be of those brought near (to myself)."

Pickthall He said: Aye, and ye will then surely be of those brought near (to me).

Muhsin Khan Musa (Moses) said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw!"

Pickthall Moses said unto them: Throw what ye are going to throw!

Muhsin Khan So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), it is we who will certainly win!"

Pickthall Then they threw down their cords and their staves and said: By Pharaoh's might, lo! we verily are the winners.

Muhsin Khan Then Musa (Moses) threw his stick, and behold, it swallowed up all the falsehoods which they showed!

Pickthall Then Moses threw his staff and lo! it swallowed that which they did falsely show.

Muhsin Khan And the sorcerers fell down prostrate.

Pickthall And the wizards were flung prostrate,

Muhsin Khan Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

Pickthall Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

Muhsin Khan "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)."

Pickthall The Lord of Moses and Aaron.

Muhsin Khan [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all."

Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know. Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will crucify you every one.

Muhsin Khan They said: "No harm! Surely, to our Lord (Allah) we are to return;

Pickthall They said: It is no hurt, for lo! unto our Lord we shall return.

Muhsin Khan "Verily! We really hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers [in Musa (Moses) and in the Monotheism which he has brought from Allah]."

Pickthall Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the first of the believers.

Muhsin Khan And We inspired Musa (Moses), saying: "Take away My slaves by night, verily, you will be pursued."

Pickthall And We inspired Moses, saying: Take away My slaves by night, for ye will be pursued.

Muhsin Khan Then Fir'aun (Pharaoh) sent callers to (all) the cities.

Pickthall Then Pharaoh sent into the cities summoners,

Muhsin Khan (Saying): "Verily! These indeed are but a small band.

Pickthall (Who said): Lo! these indeed are but a little troop,

Muhsin Khan "And verily, they have done what has enraged us;

Pickthall And lo! they are offenders against us.

Muhsin Khan "But we are host all assembled, amply fore-warned."

Pickthall And lo! we are a ready host.

Muhsin Khan So, We expelled them from gardens and springs,

Pickthall Thus did We take them away from gardens and watersprings,

Muhsin Khan Treasures, and every kind of honourable place.

Pickthall And treasures and a fair estate.

Muhsin Khan Thus [We turned them (Pharaoh's people) out] and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them.

Pickthall Thus (were those things taken from them) and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them.

Muhsin Khan So they pursued them at sunrise.

Pickthall And they overtook them at sunrise.

Muhsin Khan And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Musa (Moses) said: "We are sure to be overtaken."

Pickthall And when the two hosts saw each other, those with Moses said: Lo! we are indeed caught.

Muhsin Khan [Musa (Moses)] said: "Nay, verily! With me is my Lord, He will guide me."

Pickthall He said: Nay, verily! for lo! my Lord is with me. He will guide me.

Muhsin Khan Then We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

Pickthall Then We inspired Moses, saying: Smite the sea with thy staff. And it parted, and each part was as a mountain vast.

Muhsin Khan Then We brought near the others [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) party] to that place.

Pickthall Then brought We near the others to that place.

Muhsin Khan And We saved Musa (Moses) and all those with him.

Pickthall And We saved Moses and those with him, every one;

Muhsin Khan Then We drowned the others.

Pickthall And We drowned the others.

Muhsin Khan Verily! In this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers.

Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.

Muhsin Khan And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall And lo, thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan And recite to them the story of Ibrahim (Abraham).

Pickthall Recite unto them the story of Abraham:

Muhsin Khan When he said to his father and his people: "What do you worship?"

Pickthall When he said unto his father and his folk: What worship ye?

Muhsin Khan They said: "We worship idols, and to them we are ever devoted."

Pickthall They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted unto them.

Muhsin Khan He said: "Do they hear you, when you call (on them)?

Pickthall He said: Do they hear you when ye cry?

Muhsin Khan "Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?"

Pickthall Or do they benefit or harm you?

Muhsin Khan They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing so."

Pickthall They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting on this wise.

Muhsin Khan He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping,

Pickthall He said: See now that which ye worship,

Muhsin Khan "You and your ancient fathers?

Pickthall Ye and your forefathers!

Muhsin Khan "Verily! They are enemies to me, save the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists);

Pickthall Lo! they are (all) an enemy unto me, save the Lord of the Worlds,

Muhsin Khan "Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me;

Pickthall Who created me, and He doth guide me,

Muhsin Khan "And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink.

Pickthall And Who feedeth me and watereth me

Muhsin Khan "And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.

Pickthall And when I sicken, then He healeth me,

Muhsin Khan "And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again);

Pickthall And Who causeth me to die, then giveth me life (again),

Muhsin Khan "And Who, I hope will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection),"

Pickthall And Who, I ardently hope, will forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.

Muhsin Khan My Lord! Bestow Hukman (religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) on me, and join me with the righteous;

Pickthall My Lord! Vouchsafe me wisdom and unite me to the righteous.

Muhsin Khan And grant me an honourable mention in later generations;

Pickthall And give unto me a good report in later generations.

Muhsin Khan And make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Delight;

Pickthall And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Delight,

Muhsin Khan And forgive my father, verily he is of the erring;

Pickthall And forgive my father. Lo! heis of those who err.

Muhsin Khan And disgrace me not on the Day when (all the creatures) will be resurrected;

Pickthall And abase me not on the day when they are raised,

Muhsin Khan The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,

Pickthall The day when wealth and sons avail not (any man)

Muhsin Khan Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy)].

Pickthall Save him who bringeth unto Allah a whole heart.

Muhsin Khan And Paradise will be brought near to the Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2).

Pickthall And the Garden will be brought nigh for those who ward off (evil).

Muhsin Khan And the (Hell) Fire will be placed in full view of the erring.

Pickthall And hell will appear plainly to the erring.

Muhsin Khan And it will be said to them: "Where are those (the false gods whom you used to set up as rivals with Allah) that you used to worship

Pickthall And it will be said unto them: Where is (all) that ye used to worship

Muhsin Khan "Instead of Allah? Can they help you or (even) help themselves?"

Pickthall Instead of Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?

Muhsin Khan Then they will be thrown on their faces into the (Fire), They and the Ghawun (devils, and those who were in error).

Pickthall Then will they be hurled therein, they and the seducers

Muhsin Khan And the whole hosts of Iblis (Satan) together.

Pickthall And the hosts of Iblis, together.

Muhsin Khan They will say while contending therein,

Pickthall And they will say, when they are quarrelling therein:

Muhsin Khan By Allah, we were truly in a manifest error,

Pickthall By Allah, of a truth we were in error manifest

Muhsin Khan When We held you (false gods) as equals (in worship) with the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists);

Pickthall When we made you equal with the Lord of the Worlds.

Muhsin Khan And none has brought us into error except the Mujrimun [Iblis (Satan) and those of human beings who commit crimes, murderers, polytheists, oppressors, etc.].

Pickthall It was but the guilty who misled us.

Muhsin Khan Now we have no intercessors,

Pickthall Now we have no intercessors

Muhsin Khan Nor a close friend (to help us).

Pickthall Nor any loving friend.

Muhsin Khan (Alas!) If we only had a chance to return (to the world), we shall truly be among the believers!

Pickthall Oh, that we had another turn (on earth), that we might be of the believers!

Muhsin Khan Verily! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers!

Muhsin Khan And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall And lo, thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan The people of Nuh (Noah) belied the Messengers.

Pickthall Noah's folk denied the messengers (of Allah),

Muhsin Khan When their brother Nuh (Noah) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

Pickthall When their brother Noah said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

Muhsin Khan "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

Pickthall Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you,

Muhsin Khan "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

Pickthall So keep your duty to Allah, and obey me.

Muhsin Khan "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

Pickthall And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds.

Muhsin Khan "So keep your duty to Allah, fear Him and obey me."

Pickthall So keep your duty to Allah, and obey me.

Muhsin Khan They said: "Shall we believe in you, when the meanest (of the people) follow you?"

Pickthall They said: Shall we put faith in thee, when the lowest (of the people) follow thee?

Muhsin Khan He said: "And what knowledge have I of what they used to do?

Pickthall He said: And what knowledge have I of what they may have been doing (in the past)?

Muhsin Khan "Their account is only with my Lord, if you could (but) know.

Pickthall Lo! their reckoning is my Lord's concern, if ye but knew;

Muhsin Khan "And I am not going to drive away the believers.

Pickthall And I am not (here) to repulse believers.

Muhsin Khan I am only a plain warner."

Pickthall I am only a plain warner.

Muhsin Khan They said: "If you cease not, O Nuh (Noah)! You will surely be among those stoned (to death)."

Pickthall They said: If thou cease not, O Noah, thou wilt surely be among those stoned (to death).

Muhsin Khan He said: "My Lord! Verily, my people have belied me.

Pickthall He said: My Lord! Lo! my own folk deny me.

Muhsin Khan Therefore judge You between me and them, and save me and those of the believers who are with me."

Pickthall Therefor judge Thou between us, a (conclusive) judgment, and save me and those believers who are with me.

Muhsin Khan And We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

Pickthall And We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

Muhsin Khan Then We drowned the rest (disbelievers) thereafter.

Pickthall Then afterward We drowned the others.

Muhsin Khan Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.

Muhsin Khan And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall And lo, thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan 'Ad (people) belied the Messengers.

Pickthall (The tribe of) A'ad denied the messengers (of Allah).

Muhsin Khan When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

Pickthall When their brother Hud said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

Muhsin Khan "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

Pickthall Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you,

Muhsin Khan "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

Pickthall So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.

Muhsin Khan "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists).

Pickthall And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds.

Muhsin Khan "Do you build high palaces on every high place, while you do not live in them?

Pickthall Build ye on every high place a monument for vain delight?

Muhsin Khan "And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever.

Pickthall And seek ye out strongholds, that haply ye may last for ever?

Muhsin Khan "And when you seize, seize you as tyrants?

Pickthall And if ye seize by force, seize ye as tyrants?

Muhsin Khan "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

Pickthall Rather keep your duty to Allah, and obey me.

Muhsin Khan "And keep your duty to Him, fear Him Who has aided you with all (good things) that you know.

Pickthall Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know,

Muhsin Khan "He has aided you with cattle and children.

Pickthall Hath aided you with cattle and sons.

Muhsin Khan "And gardens and springs.

Pickthall And gardens and watersprings.

Muhsin Khan "Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day."

Pickthall Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day.

Muhsin Khan They said: "It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach.

Pickthall They said: It is all one to us whether thou preachest or art not of those who preach;

Muhsin Khan "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.19, Page 97]

Pickthall This is but a fable of the men of old,

Muhsin Khan "And we are not going to be punished."

Pickthall And we shall not be doomed.

Muhsin Khan So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

Pickthall And they denied him; therefor We destroyed them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.

Muhsin Khan And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall And lo! thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan Thamud (people) belied the Messenger.

Pickthall (The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah)

Muhsin Khan When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

Pickthall When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

Muhsin Khan "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

Pickthall Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you,

Muhsin Khan "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

Pickthall So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.

Muhsin Khan "Will you be left secure in that which you have here?

Pickthall Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us,

Muhsin Khan "In gardens and springs.

Pickthall In gardens and watersprings.

Muhsin Khan And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix.

Pickthall And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees,

Muhsin Khan "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill.

Pickthall Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful?

Muhsin Khan "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

Pickthall Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me,

Muhsin Khan "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners],

Pickthall And obey not the command of the prodigal,

Muhsin Khan "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not."

Pickthall Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not.

Muhsin Khan They said: "You are only of those bewitched!

Pickthall They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched;

Muhsin Khan "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful."

Pickthall Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful.

Muhsin Khan He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known.

Pickthall He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day.

Muhsin Khan "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you."

Pickthall And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day.

Muhsin Khan But they killed her, and then they became regretful.

Pickthall But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent.

Muhsin Khan So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

Pickthall So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.

Muhsin Khan And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan The prople of Lout (Lot) (those dwelt in the towns of Sodom in Palestine) belied the Messengers.

Pickthall The folk of Lot denied the messengers (of Allah),

Muhsin Khan When their brother Lout (Lot) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

Pickthall When their brother Lot said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

Muhsin Khan "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

Pickthall Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you,

Muhsin Khan "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

Pickthall So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.

Muhsin Khan "Go you in unto the males of the 'Alamin (mankind),

Pickthall What! Of all creatures do ye come unto the males,

Muhsin Khan "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your wives? Nay, you are a trespassing people!"

Pickthall And leave the wives your Lord created for you? Nay, but ye are froward folk.

Muhsin Khan They said: "If you cease not. O Lout (Lot)! Verily, you will be one of those who are driven out!"

Pickthall They said: If thou cease not, O Lot, thou wilt soon be of the outcast.

Muhsin Khan He said: "I am, indeed, of those who disapprove with severe anger and fury your (this evil) action (of sodomy).

Pickthall He said: I am in truth of those who hate your conduct.

Muhsin Khan "My Lord! Save me and my family from what they do."

Pickthall My Lord! Save me and my household from what they do.

Muhsin Khan So We saved him and his family, all,

Pickthall So We saved him and his household, every one,

Muhsin Khan Except an old woman (his wife) among those who remained behind.

Pickthall Save an old woman among those who stayed behind.

Muhsin Khan Then afterward We destroyed the others.

Pickthall Then afterward We destroyed the others.

Muhsin Khan And We rained on them a rain (of torment). And how evil was the rain of those who had been warned.

Pickthall And We rained on them a rain. And dreadful is the rain of those who have been warned.

Pickthall And lo! thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan The dwellers of Al-Aiyka [near Madyan (Midian)] belied the Messengers.

Pickthall The dwellers in the wood (of Midian) denied the messengers (of Allah),

Muhsin Khan When Shu'aib (Shuaib) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah (and obey Him)?

Pickthall When Shu'eyb said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

Muhsin Khan "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

Pickthall Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you,

Muhsin Khan "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

Pickthall So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.

Muhsin Khan "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

Pickthall And I ask of you no wage for it; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds.

Muhsin Khan "Give full measure, and cause no loss (to others).

Pickthall Give full measure, and be not of those who give less (than the due).

Muhsin Khan "And weigh with the true and straight balance.

Pickthall And weigh with the true balance.

Muhsin Khan "And defraud not people by reducing their things, nor do evil, making corruption and mischief in the land.

Pickthall Wrong not mankind in their goods, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth.

Muhsin Khan "And fear Him Who created you and the generations of the men of old."

Pickthall And keep your duty unto Him Who created you and the generations of the men of old.

Muhsin Khan They said: "You are only one of those bewitched!

Pickthall They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched;

Muhsin Khan "You are but a human being like us and verily, we think that you are one of the liars!

Pickthall Thou art but a mortal like us , and lo! we deem thee of the liars.

Muhsin Khan "So cause a piece of the heaven to fall on us, if you are of the truthful!"

Pickthall Then make fragments of the heaven fall upon us, if thou art of the truthful.

Muhsin Khan He said: "My Lord is the Best Knower of what you do."

Pickthall He said: My Lord is Best Aware of what ye do.

Muhsin Khan But they belied him, so the torment of the day of shadow (a gloomy cloud) seized them, indeed that was the torment of a Great Day.

Pickthall But they denied him, so there came on them the retribution of the day of gloom. Lo! it was the retribution of an awful day.

Muhsin Khan Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.

Muhsin Khan And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Pickthall And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan And truly, this (the Quran) is a revelation from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists),

Pickthall And lo! it is a revelation of the Lord of the Worlds,

Muhsin Khan Which the trustworthy Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] has brought down;

Pickthall Which the True Spirit hath brought down

Muhsin Khan Upon your heart (O Muhammad SAW) that you may be (one) of the warners,

Pickthall Upon thy heart, that thou mayst be (one) of the warners,

Muhsin Khan In the plain Arabic language.

Pickthall In plain Arabic speech.

Muhsin Khan And verily, it (the Quran, and its revelation to Prophet Muhammad SAW) is (announced) in the Scriptures [i.e. the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] of former people.

Pickthall And lo! it is in the Scriptures of the men of old.

Muhsin Khan Is it not a sign to them that the learned scholars (like 'Abdullah bin Salam who embraced Islam) of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?

Pickthall Is it not a token for them that the doctors of the Children of Israel know it?

Muhsin Khan And if We had revealed it (this Quran) unto any of the non-Arabs,

Pickthall And if We had revealed it unto one of any other nation than the Arabs,

Muhsin Khan And he had recited it unto them, they would not have believed in it.

Pickthall And he had read it unto them, they would not have believed in it.

Muhsin Khan Thus have We caused it (the denial of the Quran) to enter the hearts of the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, etc.).

Pickthall Thus do We make it traverse the hearts of the guilty.

Muhsin Khan They will not believe in it until they see the painful torment;

Pickthall They will not believe in it till they behold the painful doom,

Muhsin Khan It shall come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;

Pickthall So that it will come upon them suddenly, when they perceive not.

Muhsin Khan Then they will say: "Can we be respited?"

Pickthall Then they will say: Are we to be reprieved?

Muhsin Khan Would they then wish for Our Torment to be hastened on?

Pickthall Would they (now) hasten on Our doom?

Muhsin Khan Tell Me, if We do let them enjoy for years,

Pickthall Hast thou then seen, if We content them for (long) years,

Muhsin Khan And afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised!

Pickthall And then cometh that which they were promised,

Muhsin Khan All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them.

Pickthall (How) that wherewith they were contented naught availeth them?

Muhsin Khan And never did We destroy a township, but it had its warners

Pickthall And We destroyed no township but it had its warners

Muhsin Khan By way of reminder, and We have never been unjust.

Pickthall For reminder, for We never were oppressors.

Muhsin Khan And it is not the Shayatin (devils) who have brought it (this Quran) down,

Pickthall The devils did not bring it down.

Muhsin Khan Neither would it suit them, nor they can (produce it).

Pickthall It is not meet for them, nor is it in their power,

Muhsin Khan Verily, they have been removed far from hearing it.

Pickthall Lo! verily they are banished from the hearing.

Muhsin Khan So invoke not with Allah another ilah (god) lest you be among those who receive punishment.

Pickthall Therefor invoke not with Allah another god, lest thou be one of the doomed.

Muhsin Khan And warn your tribe (O Muhammad SAW) of near kindred.

Pickthall And warn thy tribe of near kindred,

Muhsin Khan And be kind and humble to the believers who follow you.

Pickthall And lower thy wing (in kindness) unto those believers who follow thee.

Muhsin Khan Then if they disobey you, say: "I am innocent of what you do."

Pickthall And if they (thy kinsfolk) disobey thee, say: Lo! I am innocent of what they do.

Muhsin Khan And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful,

Pickthall And put thy trust in the Mighty, the Merciful.

Muhsin Khan Who sees you (O Muhammad SAW) when you stand up (alone at night for Tahajjud prayers).

Pickthall Who seeth thee when thou standest up (to pray)

Muhsin Khan And your movements among those who fall prostrate (along with you to Allah in the five compulsory congregational prayers).

Pickthall And (seeth) thine abasement among those who fall prostrate (in worship).

Muhsin Khan Verily! He, only He, is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

Pickthall Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Knower.

Muhsin Khan Shall I inform you (O people!) upon whom the Shayatin (devils) descend?

Pickthall Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

Muhsin Khan They descend on every lying (one who tells lies), sinful person.

Pickthall They descend on every sinful, false one.

Muhsin Khan Who gives ear (to the devils and they pour what they may have heard of the unseen from the angels), and most of them are liars.

Pickthall They listen eagerly, but most of them are liars.

Muhsin Khan As for the poets, the erring follow them,

Pickthall As for poets, the erring follow them.

Muhsin Khan See you not that they speak about every subject (praising others right or wrong) in their poetry?

Pickthall Hast thou not seen how they stray in every valley,

Muhsin Khan And that they say what they do not do.

Pickthall And how they say that which they do not?

Muhsin Khan Except those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much, and reply back (in poetry) to the unjust poetry (which the pagan poets utter against the Muslims). And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned.

Pickthall Save those who believe and do good works, and remember Allah much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. Those who do wrong will come to know by what a (great) reverse they will be overturned!
